1) Abstract

A content analysis was carried out on front page articles from 6 national newspapers published between January and April 2010. Half of front pages in this period concerned immigration, crime or security issues. This is higher in conservative or rightwing newspapers.

3.1) Main Issues

The events in Rosarno, a revolt of immigrant agricultural workers against their poor conditions of labour and housing and the conflict with locals and the involved local maffia, dominated these pages, despite other serious issues on the news agenda. Differences between rightwing (CS, Avvenire) and 'leftwing' press (Libero) resulted, with the latter paying much less attention to crime, but also publishing less investigations and backgrounds. The term 'illegal immigrant' was no longer as frequent as before, the more neutral 'immigrants' had become more frequent in 2010 coverage.

3.2) Media

Avvenire, La Stampa, Il Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Il Giornale, Libero, all front pages published from 1-1-2010 until 30-4-2010.
